Never sleep again

1. Limit the space:

A work of art is, isn´t a reflection of anything. Inside resides her enigma and her
reply. The sculpture invades the space, fills it, transforms it, breaks the emptiness, feeds it
like Botero does or poeticizes it like Brancusi.
Sculpture is a way of communication. It has connections with its environment.
The difference from a banal object is that it will never disappear, or at least that is its
assignment. A work of art doesn´t belong to the artist. A work of art is necessarily useless,
but at the same time necessary for the soul.
Never sleep again is a poetic act. Transforming the void it turns into something useless
but essential for human development, with the anxiety of never disappearing. That is its
achievement. To outlive us. Hence the importance of art. It outlives us, something
that science never will, but art has been giving us that reply since Altamira was painted.

2. Invent the space.

Each work of art is a search. An explanation. Art must be dynamic.”Instead of a
hermeneutics we need an erotics of art”. (Susan Sontag). It almost seems ridiculous to
attempt to summarize the content of this beautiful piece of art by the Dutchman Luc
Huijbregts. Not only that, I consider it unnecessary. Is criticism of art a complement of the
work, is it a parasite, or maybe an appendix?
All works of art give their answers. Wood is a noble material, it reminds us of craftsmen.
Craftsmen don´t have an artistic intention, however they are good-natured. Huijbregts has
that good nature and artistic intention. Like something real, like something invented, what
does the interpretation of the work matter to itself? The author doesn´t have to say anything,
he talks through his work.
“What does the lizard know about natural history?” (Sanchez Ferlosio)

3. Interpretation of the space.

From the aesthetics we try to answer the obvious, this work is poetic, highly
styled, an impossible image that resides in its space, resisting time, knowing its own limits.
I cannot transform the work, but the work can transform me. It feeds back its
emptiness, limits its space and reinterprets mine again. A silence full of meaning exists.
An almost troublesome silence, almost uncomfortable.
Due to its reduced size, the difference between significant and meaning is almost infinitive,
once again almost.
Perhaps this is its definition, if there is one or if someone had asked me for one. Almost. An
adverb of quantity. A word that might define this work, without having an exact answer to
any problem but knowing that it radically outlives us on its own.

Joaquín Fabrellas Jiménez
